The transformation of the former School
of Drama into the Department of Theatre Arts took place
in the 1970/71 academic session when it started offering
-single honours courses, in addition to specialised
courses for the professional diploma in theatre arts.
Integrated into the academic pattern
of teaching and research is the Departments programme
of experimentation in theatre and allied arts and the
training of practitioners in the fields of drama, dance,
music, broadcasting and film. To this extent, the Department
spans the following units: Dramatic Arts, Dance Arts,
Music Arts and Media Arts all serviced by the Fine Arts
in a dynamic ensemble which enshrines the traditions
of African performance practice. Through a historic-critical
study and analysis of variation in the forms and styles
of theatrical expressions, the student is guided to
explore through the maximum utilization of his mind,
body and voice the quintessence of the actor, dancer,
and musician, the designer and animator, the playwright
and dramaturg.
The Department aims at supplying high-level
manpower for the countrys National Theatre, Culture
Houses, Broadcasting Houses, Cinema Theatres and Educational
Institutions.
