At the beginning of the 1975/76 academic
year, the first African Regional Health Education Centre
was established as a Unit within the Department of Preventive
and Social Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of this
University.
The need for preparing health workers
who are professionally qualified in health education
to meet the special health needs of African countries
has been stressed by the Organization of African Unity,
the WHO African Regional member countries, and also
at various WHO technical discussions. It was as a result
of this mutual concern that the Health Education Centre
came to be established, primarily to serve the needs
of the Anglophone countries of Africa. The Federal Government
of Nigeria, WHO and UNICEF are co-operating with the
University of Ibadan in the development of the Centre
with the following aims in view:
- To develop and consolidate facilities for preparation
of specialists at postgraduate level for the Anglophone
countries in Africa and
- To develop facilities for applied research into
behavioural problems related to public health practice
and the solution needed for policy formation and planning
of health programmes in Africa.
Two programmes are currently being run
at the Centre: the Master of Public Health Degree and
the Advanced Diploma Certificate in Health Education.
The former is a postgraduate programme and the latter
non-graduate. In setting up these two Programmes, the
prevailing requirements for other degrees and diplomas
conferred by this University were closely adhered to.
The holders of the Master of Pubic Health Degrees with
specialization in health education could potentially
be placed as key personnel in Health Education Units,
Training Institutions, research projects in the Ministries
of Health, Education or Welfare, as well as in Professional
Organizations and Voluntary Agencies.
Further details on admission requirements
duration of the courses, etc. are included in the Faculty
of Medicine Prospectus.
